Bowen sets the stage for a new source of ruin

Everyone in Australia should IMO watch the Whitehouse effect because it is a solid documentation of how the discussion of both AGW ( anthropomorphic global warming ) particularly ( as doco material largely ends over 20 years ago) and CC ( climate change ) developed.

It hasn't changed my view that CO2 was and still is wrongly implicated in a disaster scenario. Symbolically this story on AGW ends where that story failed in

the late 90's and CC took over .

The biggest problem about the political ship of panic about CO2 is that its changed hulls ( from AGW to CC) and is therefore likely to sink on intellectual competency grounds alone ( forget where the oil lobby is -- to easy to blame them and simple Marxism (mix of projection ,envy and idealism etc ?)  is still our enemy .

Unless  public debate  goes back to basics ( how to get energy) the confusion that this doco so well establishes, will remain .

Typically, when a serious problem like fuel costs and oil availability arises , no political ( UN media ,party ) can be trusted  to proactively address it.

The mad post Christian mood that we can eliminate  greed and play god with the atmosphere has most definitely added to the confusion and distractions ( like C02)  . God help us if any of us think the UN has the answers .

What the doco makes even more concrete for me is that

1. the abuse of fossil fuels  remains a threat  but

2. the political sides that have developed around it are not stable and never have been

3 the confusion in the USA over 20 years ago , so well  shown in the more open discussions in the USA , failed to resolve the focus and the ways forward leading to Bush's hesitation around 1992 when Rio happened

4 The UN as can be reasonably be expected of an organization which is so heavenly minded  it thinks it can state solutions to world problems  when its main members  don't solve their own , only reinforced resistance in the USA as a whole to any action commitments at Rio in June.

5 The USA's reaction to what amounted to bullying tactics was predictable normal and quite reasonable. Doesn't mean we should ignore real truths .

6  Schnieder and Reilly ( the influential scientists rightly featured on reflection at the end ) were most interesting as they were recorded well and reflect the limited capacity of any scientist to deal with all the issues involved

A lot of that huge angst was ours too but we Aussies  , like the people of the free world , did not see fully just HOW the discussion targets changed . We live on an island and are fed by the ABC ( a bunch of idealists - not scientists ) .

The doco is very useful list of changing worries from heat m drought to ice melts, storms and sea level rise .

Jane ( below ) has IMO nailed the end of the AGW era to Gores smart arsing  and that films and the ABC's preoccupation with the J curve ,before 2000

The next doco( 2000-25) needs to focus on what truths have come forward since that time that add to the need to plan for the future ...and not panic the people through the game of politics.

As Bush rightly said " Its the eco stupid " that matters and a lot of good work by Vaclav recently on that ( How the world works) ,

CC is a messy watery hole ( like the gold prize badge of Net Zero) that i don't think has much chance of surviving.  AGW has more testability IMO  http://quickfiz.blogspot.com

I do like Schneiders sound summary that the needed change will not come quickly, but will be generational. We don't know how realistic that will be either .

BUT

Young people, unlike us oldies, are leading the way in reducing pressure on the environment ( this is the realists end game here !!!) ( non caged eggs, local milk) smaller houses and cars .

But let no one think we are near Nirvana . The better world is worlds away and greed and deception ( incl self deception)  are here with us to stay .
